Donald Trump has certainly missed his mark. For someone who prides himself on being a “television star” he certainly is not good with his timing. As most people already realize, Special Counsel Robert Mueller is going to bring down the entire Trump enterprise. While America does not look kindly upon traitors, Trump had many chances to fire Mueller. An attempted replication of the Saturday Night Massacre would further hurt Trump’s chances of staying in power. However, there were previous times where this grave mistake might have caused less damage to his failed administration.

It’s now known that Trump attempted to fire Mueller only a month after being appointed to the role of Special Counsel. This may have been Trump’s best time to do so. Once the first indictments came down from Mueller’s grand jury, there was much more scrutiny placed on all of Trump’s decisions. If not for the threat of resignation by Trump’s own White House Counsel, he may have gone forward with initiating the path to firing Mueller last summer. There was also wide speculation that he would attempt to end Mueller’s investigation just days before Christmas, once Congress took its recess.

Now that there is a nationwide response plan in place if Mueller is fired, it appears there would be an even greater onslaught of protest should Trump even attempt to do it. This leaves Trump with very few options if he does intend to end Mueller’s investigation into his deals with Russia to steal an election. Trump’s best scenario would have been to do so when many Americans were preoccupied.

While Donald Trump’s sudden agreement to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un managed to steal the headlines for awhile, it did nothing to distract most observers from the truth that there is currently an American traitor in the White House. With the distraction of March Madness basketball tournament underway, today would have been Trump’s best time to ensure he could limit those marching in the street if he fired Mueller. The fact Trump did not pull the trigger today shows that he’s not paying attention or he’s too afraid, while knowing Robert Mueller is coming for him no matter what he does. That should make all Americans feel better.
