What was THAT?

We’ve spent a long time watching Donald Trump humiliate himself while attempting to interact with various world leaders. I say “attempting” because it’s pretty clear that Trump has no idea how social interactions are supposed to go, or how a person is supposed to act. It’s roughly like watching an alien โ€“ a deranged one at that โ€“ trying to figure out how to fake normal human social interaction. Trump has never known how to behave like a normal person, even when he’s occasionally tried.

That said, as continues to be the case with all things Trump these days, his social interactions are getting worse. Far worse. Trump tried to hold a joint press conference with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday, and if you didn’t see it, consider yourself lucky. At one point Trump lectured Ramaphosa in an incoherently confused manner. At another point Trump appeared to be trying to convince Ramaphosa to give him a free airplane.

At no point during the event did Trump come off as cognitively competent or mentally competent. He came off badly even for Trump, which is saying something given that he’s always come off very badly in these situations. Something is very, very wrong with this guy. And whatever combination of things it is, it’s getting worse by the day โ€“ literally.

Where is this headed? No one knows. Trump will obviously continue on a downward slide, and once he falls a bit further, he’ll be at the stage where his mental incompetence is so blatant that even the media will have to acknowledge it. It’s difficult to imagine this process taking four years, or even one year. Think about where Trump is now, how quickly he’s been falling, and think about where he might be by the end of 2025. Something has got to give. And it will. We just don’t yet know what.
