With everything that has occurred in the past week involving the Trump-Russia conspiracy, it makes sense that Republicans in congress are clearly on edge. After Senate Republicans tried to force through a Supreme Court nominee with historically low transparency, and he was accused of rape in the process, GOP anxiety has elevated to increased levels. The Friday bombshell that Paul Manafort was pleading guilty and agreeing to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller has likely created an even higher level of worry.

Avoiding his typical Twitter rants, Donald Trump actually went twenty hours between political tweets. Instead of proving to the world that Paul Manafort flipping was driving him crazy, Trump proceeded to retweet multiple agencies tracking Hurricane Florence. Based on Trump’s history of reacting explosively to bad news, he was likely instructed by advisors to avoid any political comments.

As Palmer Report has documented, Trump has a well known pattern of displaying his level of desperation through his use of Twitter. Typically, when he limits himself to retweeting other people, it’s a sign of intense apprehension. While it could be explained that retweeting hurricane information is a way for Trump to counter any future claims of inaction to the hurricane devastation, it is more likely his political Twitter silence was due to the devastation he felt after Manafort flipped on him.

Once Trump ended his Twitter silence, it was easy to see why he’d gone quiet. Instead of wishing the best for those in the path of the storm, he immediately returned to previous claims that the massive death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria was fake. He then made a strange pivot, accusing President Barack Obama of misstating the number of states in America. This was nothing more than a slip of the tongue, it’s yet another instance of Trump spewing lies in a moment of total panic.
