Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy are implicated in Trump-Russia scandal

Congressman Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy, the two Republican leaders of the House Intelligence Committee, are pushing forward with the release of a controversial memo written by Nunes about the Trump-Russia scandal. It was supposed to exonerate Donald Trump and implicate those investigating him, but the memo is such a disaster, even Trump’s own DOJ advised him not to release it. Yet Nunes and Gowdy seem to want it out there anyway, regardless of whether it ends up helping or hurting Trump. Everyone keeps asking why. The answer is in plain sight.

One of the key moments in the Trump-Russia scandal came when Michael Flynn and the Russian Ambassador illegally conspired against the United States during the transition period. Flynn was informing the Trump transition team of his criminal activities in real time. Flynn has since cut a plea deal, and Mueller has all of the transition team emails, which means Special Counsel Robert Mueller knows how each of those team members responded to the news and worked to cover it up. Guess who was on the Trump transition team? Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy.

The two of them have taken somewhat different approaches since the investigation has gotten underway. Nunes leaked classified information about the investigation to Trump, got himself kicked off his own committee’s investigation for several months, launched his own sham of an investigation, and wrote an idiotic memo which aims to expose abuses by investigators, but actually just makes Trump look guilty. Gowdy has largely laid low, even as he’s gotten himself named to the House Intel Committee so he can manipulate the investigation, while publicly calling for Robert Mueller to be left alone to do his job. Now they’re both united behind the idea of releasing the Nunes memo. But why?

It can’t be said enough times that Devin Nunes is an idiot. This isn’t meant to rub it in, but rather as a guideline for understanding and predicting his actions. He probably thinks his idiotic memo somehow helps Trump’s cause, which in turn helps his own cause. The bigger question here is why Trey Gowdy, a corrupt liar who is not an idiot, also wants the memo out there. Is Gowdy planning to let Nunes take the fall, in the hope that his involvement will be forgotten? We’ll find out one way or the other in the end.
