A common problem with the GOP is that they get away with a whole lot of their criminality because people tend to refuse to accept that they have agency as human beings just like everyone else. Republicans make a conscious choice to do terrible things from day to day, even if they donโ€™t necessarily do the worst thing imaginable – and they often do it knowing that their own voters wonโ€™t hold them accountable, while Democrats will go after their own elected officials for not doing enough about whatever terrible things the GOP is up to.

If youโ€™re wondering why social media, particularly Twitter, is amplifying a message of โ€œWhere are the Democrats/Democrats arenโ€™t doing anything,โ€ etc., which sounds suspiciously like what Donald Trump was saying during his first term – youโ€™ve got your answer: This is exactly what conservatives want you to echo between now and November.

Itโ€™s not true, of course, and clear for anyone paying attention to whatโ€™s happening in Congress. The court orders shutting Trump down are largely thanks to federal judges that were appointed under the Biden administration, and House Democrats are fighting back with numerous plans – particularly by refusing to cave to Trump on any of his tax cuts, which were the main driving force behind his campaign, and which were historically unpopular when they were passed in 2017.

This is exactly why Rep. Jamie Raskin took them to task. While Democrats are threatening a government shutdown and fighting Elon Muskโ€™s plan to become a de facto president, he berated the party for sitting idly by while terrible things are happening to the country. This is the message we need to be spreading now: Why is Elon Musk the president and why are Republicans content to do nothing?
