The metaphor of women as birds has been used in great literature many times. Consider the title of Maya Angelou’s book “I know why the Caged Bird Sings.” The “cage” represents Angelou’s confinement and struggle to break free from racism. Consider as well Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre.”

“I am no bird, and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will.” For centuries, women have had to struggle for equality, for the same rights that many men take for granted. It’s been a struggle that has taken us to where we are today — with many of those rights on the chopping block — if Republicans are allowed to win. This is because many Republican men don’t really like or understand women at heart. Just listen to Brian Kilmeade.

Kilmeade is yet another Fox non-host. He is also under fire. His latest comments provide evidence as to why it is so vitally important Democrats win it all in November.

Nina Jankowicz will head up the Disinformation Governance Board (DHS.) This board will handle the countering of disinformation. And Jankowicz has the experience to do the job. She is beyond qualified. Only Kilmeade doesn’t appear to think so. Because there is one thing about Jankowicz that bothers him so much, he felt compelled to air his chauvinistic grievances on air.

That “thing” is that Jankowicz is pregnant. Kilmeade, sounding aggrieved as only a Fox misogynist could sound, suggested it was a mistake giving her the job because he “is not sure how you get a job and then you just — you can’t do a job for three months.”

Needless to say, Kilmeade’s remarks infuriated many people — likely because he looked like the jackass he is. The PDA (Pregnancy discrimination act) makes it clear that one cannot discriminate based on pregnancy.

Perhaps Kilmeade should get out of his Fox echo chamber and do some reading — but that might be a tall order for him. Fox is just getting worse. Any normal company wouldn’t think twice about firing Kilmeade for these hateful and ignorant statements.

But because this is Fox, that is likely won’t happen. To Kilmeade. Women don’t have to take this garbage from you. Women have come a long way. Women are free of cages and sing the song of independence. And you will never be able to put us back in.
