There. Is. No. Bottom.

The further we get into Donald Trump’s second term, the more it becomes clear that Congressional Republicans are intent on proving there is no bottom when it comes to their sycophancy. Presumably elected to govern the nation, the GOP instead has shown its true priority is worshipping a twice-impeached man-child who inspired and prolonged the infamous January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, where they work.
Back in February, I wrote about how New York Rep. Claudia Tenney introduced a bill to merge June 14 (which is already Flag Day) into a new federal holiday to celebrate Trump’s birthday. In her announcement, Tenney called Trump “the most consequential President in modern American history” and exclaimed that “his impact on the nation is undeniable.”
Now a few months later, Florida Rep. Greg Steube has introduced the Make Autorail Great Again Act. This “MAGA Act” would withhold federal funding from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) until it agrees to rebrand itself as the “Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access,” or WMAGA, so that its acronym would echo Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. It would also rename the Metrorail system the “Trump Train.”
This follows even more cultish and cartoonish legislation, including North Carolina Rep. Addison McDowell’s bill to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Trump, and South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson’s attempt to enter a $250 bill with Trump’s greedy face on it into circulation. This is not sober leadership, but shameless idol worshipping. It is a sad—and dangerous—manifestation of what the party of Lincoln has become.
