The ugly truth about Trump
Let’s talk about the plain, unvarnished, UGLY truth about Donald Trump. Let’s talk about just WHY he wants to get rid of so much. Let’s talk about — the ARTS. I guess I am one of many people who would describe themselves as “artsy.” I love theatre, adore music, am a voracious reader, and come from a family of writers. So yes, all things considered, I wear the label of “artsy” quite proudly.
This is why I was so upset upon hearing of Donald Trump’s latest desire — to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts. This can be seen in Trump’s latest insane budget proposal, which one hopes no Republican will vote for — at least not if they want to keep their seats in the midterms.
Trump also wants to eliminate the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It is described as consistent with Trump’s desire to eliminate “waste ,fraud, and abuse.” Waste, fraud and abuse? The ARTS are waste, fraud, and abuse? Maybe to THIS fool.
However, they are NOT, in fact, waste, fraud or abuse. Not to the millions upon millions of budding actors, novelists, artists, librarians, actors, and historians. Not to their audiences. Let me pose to you a question. Do you suppose Donald Trump has ever wandered the aisle of a library for even half a minute?
Do you think he has ever TASTED a book? And yes, books have a taste. They taste of history and mystique. The beauty of their aroma can be inhaled in the rows upon rows of beauty, of pages of magic that sit quietly in library aisles waiting to be touched, taken out of their home for just a little while, waiting to perform their sparking magic on yet another yearningly imaginative child.
Has Donald Trump ever perhaps wandered the halls of a museum? Has he ever experienced the joy of learning about history, of the human condition, of what folks long ago, felt and thought? And theatre? Well, he PRETENDS he is an expert in theatre. I doubt that he is.
I do not see Donald Trump as sitting in hushed mezzanines, wiping away a tear or many tears, as beautiful dancing imagery plays out on stage in yet another glorious musical. The truth is that Donald Trump wants to eliminate the things he does not understand, and has no interest in.
And that finally is the reason for SO MUCH elimination of SO much, all given the title if waste, fraud and abuse. THIS is the ugly truth. When you get to the heart of the matter, the ugly truth is Donald Trump has no interest in nor knowledge of, just about ANYTHING.
