This could finish off Eric Adams

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a “Democrat” with the policies of a Republican, who is currently under federal criminal indictment and awaiting trial, is reportedly heading to Mar-a-Lago tonight to meet with Donald Trump.

It’s not difficult to figure out that Adams is looking for a Trump pardon. At this point it’s the only chance Adams has of avoiding prison, as the criminal case against him seems like a lock. But what is Adams going to offer Trump in return for a pardon?

Adams could offer to become a Republican, which Trump could then brag about. But what would that accomplish? The Governor of New York can remove the Mayor of New York City at any time. If Adams accepts a pardon, the Governor would seemingly remove him on the spot, given that a pardon is legally a confession of guilt.

The more dangerous scenario would be that Eric Adams agrees to implement pro-Trump policies in New York City for a period of time, and only then will Trump pardon him. But that scenario is actually dangerous for Adams. If he starts trying to implement Trump’s agenda in the city, particularly if it involves Trump’s desire to illegally round up immigrants, this could also prompt the Governor to immediately remove Adams from office. We’ll see how this plays out. But it’s hard to imagine Adams surviving this.
