Supreme Court rules against Donald Trump
The courts have been steadily ruling against Donald Trump over the past six weeks. Nearly every time the Democrats or the states or anyone else has challenged Trump’s antic in court, Trump has lost. Trump has also lost most of the subsequent appeals court rulings. This of course only leaves the Supreme Court, which these days is both corrupt and unpredictable.
Today the Supreme Court ruled on the first Trump-related case, and interestingly enough, it ruled against Trump. By a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court has ordered the Trump regime to reinstate the foreign aid that it tried to cut. So at least now we know that the Supreme Court isn’t going to side with Trump every time, especially when he’s making these kinds of moves in such blatantly illegal fashion. The Supreme Court’s job isn’t to decide whether foreign aid is good for bad. The Supreme Court’s job is to decide whether Trump was following the law when he slashed it. And this time the Supreme Court got it right.
Now we’re entering interesting new territory. Donald Trump could try to just ignore this Supreme Court ruling. But if Trump does that, all he’d do is embolden the Supreme Court to start ruling against him on everything, in order to reestablish its own power. It’s more likely that Trump’s babysitters will quietly go along with this Supreme Court ruling in order to keep the peace, and just feed Trump some fish story about how he secretly won the battle. At this point Trump is deep enough into dementia to believe anything that his people tell him.
As for the Supreme Court, we’ll see what happens next. I wouldn’t get your hopes too high. This is a corrupt and unhinged court that’s likely to side with Trump at least some of the time. But today’s ruling makes clear that it’s not going to side with Trump every time – and that’s something. It means that if we keep fighting on every issue, we’ll end up prevailing on at least some of them.
