So that blew up in Trump’s face already

I recently wrote that Donald Trump’s social media posts have begun committing the worst sin of all as far as he’s concerned: they’ve become boring. Trump (or whoever is ghostwriting for him) tries to hype something, but it either falls on deaf ears, or becomes an instant punchline, or unwittingly gives something away. It’s happened again.

Over the weekend Trump announced that Qatar is giving him a new aircraft to use as Air Force One while he’s in office. It was an utterly bizarre announcement, and placed widespread scrutiny on whatever Trump might have going on with Qatar behind the scenes. It’s not difficult to imagine, for instance, a scenario where Qatar gives Trump the plane in exchange for Trump giving Qatar some kind of trade exemptions.

The problem with Trump’s increasingly ham fisted schemes is that more and more people are afraid to be associated with his corrupt stupidity. Not long after Trump announced the free airplane he was getting, Qatar announced that Trump’s statement was “inaccurate.” Oops.

So what’s going on here? It’s possible that Qatar saw the immediate controversy surrounding Trump’s announcement and decided to pull the plug for fear of getting sucked into a Trump scandal. Or, given how far gone Trump is cognitively, it’s possible that no such deal existed to begin with and Trump hallucinated the whole thing. Either way this is just plain pathetic.
