Andrew Gillum, the current Mayor of Tallahassee and the Democratic candidate for Governor of Florida, hasn’t hesitated to call out the racist tactics being employed by his Republican opponent Ron DeSantis. To the surprise of no one, DeSantis is a disciple of Donald Trump, whose violent racist rhetoric is producing uglier results by the day. DeSantis is behind in the polls, and so today Trump had a racist meltdown about Gillum.

Donald Trump went on a particularly bizarre Twitter rant in which he referred to Andrew Gillum as a “thief” – and he provided absolutely no context for why he was accusing Gillum of being a thief. For the record, there are no allegations out there about Gillum being a thief. It was fairly obvious that Trump was pushing the notion that because Gillum is black, he probably steals things.

Andrew Gillum quickly fired back, pointing out that Donald Trump couldn’t even be bothered to address his racist attack directly to Gillum: “On Twitter there is a choice between having the courage to @ the person you are trash talking, or not. Donald Trump is howling because he’s weak. Florida, go vote today.”

Meanwhile the polls continue to show that Andrew Gillum is ahead in this race, which may explain why Donald Trump is resorting to even more extreme, dishonest, and racist tactics. Ron DeSantis has run a campaign primarily based on racism thus far, and it doesn’t seem to be doing him much good. But the next Governor of Florida won’t be decided by the polls; it’ll be decided by who actually shows up and votes.
