Oh My God…
Of all the aspects of the federal government that Donald Trump has weaponized for his own corrupt gain, the US Attorney’s Office for Washington DC might be the most flagrant. Trump quietly name Ed Martin as interim US Attorney, and Martin immediately proceeded to use the office to go after Trump’s political enemies. Now Ed Martin is gone, but things have somehow gotten even worse.
If I jokingly told you that Trump just named Fox News host “Judge Jeanine” Pirro as the new interim US Attorney for Washington DC, you’d fall out of your chair laughing, right? Except it’s not a joke. It really happened. Trump announced on social media yesterday that Pirro is indeed now the top federal prosecutor in Washington DC.
It’s obvious that Trump will continue to use the US Attorney office to go after his political rivals in corrupt fashion. When you install an incompetent loyalist in a position they’re unqualified for, they’re taking the job with the understanding that they’ll have to do your bidding. And that’s exactly the role that Pirro is going to play here.
The question is how long this will last. Trump is hoping to keep Pirro in the position on an “interim” basis for as long as possible before he’s eventually forced to put a semi-legitimate nominee through Senate confirmation. But Pirro is an embarrassment and a walking talking scandal, meaning she’ll make negative headlines for herself and Trump on a regular basis. This will ramp up media and public pressure for Pirro to replaced with an actual nominee sooner rather than later.
But really, let’s take a minute to think about just how truly insane this is. Jeanine Pirro is such a piece of work that she’s considered a bottom feeder even by Fox News standards. Yet Trump has already named Pete Hegseth, who is also such a piece of work that she’s considered a bottom feeder even by Fox News standards, as Secretary of Defense (we’ve all seen how well that’s working out for him).
Trump is literally just picking people he knows on TV and putting them in charge of the federal government. If Trump had been the Home Shopping Network when the position came open, he might have named one of their hosts as the new US Attorney. But let’s be real about what’s going on here. Trump’s dementia symptoms are getting worse by the day. He can’t seem to remember who’s who anymore. So he’s reduced to hiring the familiar faces he sees on television. This one might be his most unhinged yet.
