Donald Trump seems to have a real problem with figuring out who’s alive and who’s dead. For instance, last year he made public remarks that implied he thought nineteenth century icon Frederick Douglass was still alive. Then Trump asserted that his “friend” Luciano Pavarotti was still alive, when he had in fact died a decade ago. Now Trump has offered condolences to the family of a guy who’s not actually dead.

There is still no one outside of Trump and the voices in his head who understands why he’s pushing forward with a trade war over steel and aluminum. Everyone thinks it’s a terrible idea, including the leaders of his own party. Yet Trump nonetheless held a press conference on Thursday to announce his new steel tariffs. He brought in a steelworker to speak at the event whose father was also a steelworker. That part went well enough, until Trump opened his mouth.

The steelworker said something about his father, and Trump responded by saying “Your father, Herman, is looking down…he’s very proud of you right now.” The confused steelworker then informed Trump that his father is in fact “still alive.” Somehow, this exchange really happened (link). No rational person would have listened to the steelworker’s words and assumed that his father was deceased. Trump’s brain simply isn’t functioning.

So, to recap: Frederick Douglass is dead, and has been for longer than any of us have been alive, even though Donald Trump thinks he’s an up-and-comer who’s just now coming into his own. Pavarotti has been dead for a decade, even though Trump seems to think they hung out together recently. The steelworker’s father is very much alive, even though Trump thinks he’s dead. Trump’s presidency is definitely dead, and days like this are a reminder that so are most of his brain cells.
