If Mark Meadows had simply decided not to cooperate with the January 6th Committee from the start, he’d be in the same boat as Steve Bannon. That’s a terrible boat to be in, given that Bannon has been criminally indicted for contempt and is on a path to prison for it. But because Meadows very briefly provided substantial cooperation before changing his mind, he’s managed to make things far worse for himself than if he hadn’t cooperated at all.

During his brief period of cooperation, it turns out Meadows provided the committee with crucial documentation of real time Trump White House communications on January 6th. Now that he’s flip flopped and decided not to cooperate, he’s reportedly filed suit today against the committee and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a futile effort to block evidence from the committee. Again, this is the same guy who just a few days ago gave evidence to the committee.

Because Meadows is handling this in such idiotic fashion, the committee is turning the screws against him in real time. For instance, the committee has let it be known that it has text messages between Mark Meadows and an unnamed member of Congress. The notion of overthrowing the 2020 election results was being discussed, and in response, Meadows reportedly said “I love it.”

In other words, the committee has Mark Meadows nailed – and because he’s trying to screw with the committee, it’s making sure everyone knows that it has him nailed. Even as he’s trying to file suit to block the evidence, the committee is starting to put the evidence against him out there publicly. So much for Meadows’ desperation move.

Meadows appears to fear that the committee’s evidence against him will get him criminally indicted by the DOJ on January 6th related charges, which is why he’s trying (and failing) to suppress it. At the same time, his actions are making it easy for the committee to have the DOJ criminally indict him for contempt of Congress. Meadows has found a way to lose this battle on both fronts.
