Donald Trump woke up to the news that Lev Parnas was flipping on him. Trump was then greeted with the news that Gordon Sondland went back to the House impeachment inquiry, revised his testimony, and also flipped on him. This is the kind of bodyblow day that a U.S. President rarely faces. So could things get any worse for him? Yes.

In a reminder of just how badly Donald Trump has damaged the Republican brand over the past few years, Republican Governor Matt Bevin found himself in a nail-biter of a reelection race, forcing Trump to fly in and hold a high profile last minute rally for him. In a rare moment of candor, Trump acknowledged during his speech that if Bevin were to lose, political pundits would paint it as a sign that Trump is in freefall, and “You can’t let that happen to me!”

Well, guess what? Matt Bevin lost. Donald Trump is so toxically unpopular, he just helped cost a Republican Governor his job in a deeply red state. Rachel Maddow played Trump’s “You can’t let that happen to me” clip on-air on MSNBC tonight, and then quipped “That just happened to you!”

If Matt Bevin had narrowly won reelection in a red state like Kentucky where he should have won handily, it would actually have been bad news for Donald Trump – but at least it would have given Trump something he could try to spin in his favor. As it stands now, the headlines will be that impeachment is getting uglier for Trump by the hour, and he’s so toxically unpopular he’s costing Republicans their seats. This might make the Republicans in the Senate a bit more afraid to stick their necks out for Trump when it comes to impeachment.
