We all knew it was coming, but now that it’s happened, it’s still pretty jarring. Donald Trump was bound to angrily lash out at John Bolton, after Sunday evening’s reveal that Bolton’s new book confirmed Trump’s Ukraine quid pro quo. Sure enough, shortly after midnight, Trump began teeing off on Bolton as if his presidency depended on it – or perhaps with the rage of someone who knows his presidency is doomed. Trump tweeted this bizarre screed:

I NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens. In fact, he never complained about this at the time of his very public termination. If John Bolton said this, it was only to sell a book. With that being said, the transcripts of my calls with President Zelensky are all the proof that is needed, in addition to the fact that President Zelensky & the Foreign Minister of Ukraine said there was no pressure and no problems. Additionally, I met with President Zelensky at the United Nations (Democrats said I never met) and released the military aid to Ukraine without any conditions or investigations – and far ahead of schedule. I also allowed Ukraine to purchase Javelin anti-tank missiles. My Administration has done far more than the previous Administration.

Trump is correct that John Bolton wants to sell copies of his new book, which just went live for preorder. But Bolton has every motivation to be telling the truth about Trump. If Bolton were lying, someone somewhere would leak something proving as much, and then Bolton’s book would tank. Further, Trump is lying about what his own transcript says. Also, it’s a summary, not a transcript. Trump only released the aid after he learned of the whistleblower complaint.

Of course the truly revealing part is where Donald Trump says “My Administration has done far more than the previous Administration.” Trump knows that John Bolton has more credibility with the far-right extremist crowd than he does. Trump is pandering to the far-right by insisting that he’s accomplished more than President Obama did. Of course Bolton wrote a book aimed at destroying Obama, so whatever. These two guys can have each other. But it’s clear that Trump fears Bolton will testify and finish him off.
