John McCain invited the likes of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush to his funeral – and he asked the latter two to deliver the eulogies – while also making clear that he didn’t want Donald Trump to attend. It turned the memorial service into a de facto attempt at unifying America against Trump, and Meghan McCain even went so far as to slam Trump by subverting his campaign slogan. So how did Trump deal with it all?

First, Donald Trump posted his cursory early morning rage-tweets. Then he went golfing. But it was his behavior after the McCain funeral that took a particular turn for the deranged. He tweeted a link to white supremacist propaganda site Breitbart, which he only does when he’s desperate for attention. Then he tweeted his “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” slogan in all caps, seemingly in a weak attempt at pushing back against Meghan McCain. Then came the rants.

Trump tweeted this gem: “We shouldn’t have to buy our friends with bad Trade Deals and Free Military Protection!” The responses swiftly pointed out that Trump has had to buy every “friend” he’s ever had, and that as a five time draft dodger, he wouldn’t know anything about military protection. Then Trump began quoting various rants from his own lackeys, and they all focused squarely on Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump rants about Hillary Clinton fairly often, but tonight he was laser-focused on her. Perhaps he figured out what it meant that John McCain invited Hillary to his funeral, but didn’t invite Trump, and he couldn’t handle it. Trump has been jealous of Hillary all along, and his rants have often come across as frustration at being dumber, less successful, and less respected than she is. Now it turns out McCain thought a whole lot more of Hillary than he thought of Trump as well.
