Today’s Republicans are so tone-deaf to the world around them, they end up being racist even when they’re occasionally not trying to be racist. For instance, Republican Senator Marco Rubio – known more for his idiocy and cowardice than his villainy – tried to post a tribute just now to John Lewis, who passed away last night. Unfortunately for Rubio, he completely botched it in a way that only a Republican could.

Marco Rubio tweeted just now that it was an “honor” to serve in Congress with John Lewis. Rubio then included a photo of himself and the late Elijah Cummings. He also changed his Twitter profile picture to a close-up of himself and Cummings. Rubio has since deleted the tweet (several news outlets and observers captured it first), but as of the time of publication of this article, his profile picture is still himself and Elijah Cummings.

This is embarrassing for Marco Rubio on so many levels. John Lewis and Elijah Cummings don’t even look much alike. This plays right into the racist trope that all black guys look alike, even when they don’t. Further, Rubio knew these guys personally. He worked down the hall from them for years. He took photos with them. Yet he still couldn’t be bothered to tell them apart, at a time when he was supposedly paying tribute to one of them.

Marco Rubio can’t even get the cleanup right. It’s one (unacceptable) thing to make the mistake in the first place. It’s another to delete the errant tweet, but then forget to delete the errant profile picture. What is wrong with this dope?
