Donald Trump started election day in unusual fashion, skipping his traditional pre-dawn Twitter rant in favor of saying nothing at all. But that blissful silence only lasted until lunchtime was approaching. Maybe Trump got bored. Maybe he was hungry. But once he finally did erupt today, he went straight into a bizarre meltdown, and certainly didn’t help one of his own candidates in the process.

Here’s what Trump tweeted: “There is a rumor, put out by the Democrats, that Josh Hawley of Missouri left the Arena last night early. It is Fake News. He met me at the plane when I arrived, spoke at the great Rally, & stayed to the very end. In fact, I said goodbye to him and left before he did. Deception!” If you’re wondering what he’s referring to, you’re not alone; although there was a bit of chatter on social media about Hawley’s departure last night, it resulted in precisely zero major headlines.

So why did Donald Trump decide to take a supposed scandal for him and his candidate, which almost no one was even talking about, and blow it up into something with a much higher profile? Because he’s stupid. There’s no other possible explanation for a tweet like this on election day, while people are trying to decide whether to make time today to go vote for or against the guy Trump tweeted about.

This is also a sign that none of Donald Trump’s handlers have a proper handle on him today. If he’s already melting down in self defeating fashion and it’s only lunchtime, imagine how much further he’ll embarrassingly go off the rails as the day goes on and the stakes get higher. Get your popcorn ready. Also, get out there and vote!
