The thing about federal criminal investigations is that they tend to take a long time, and they tend to be kept secret for as long as possible. For instance, none of us had any idea that Matt Gaetz was under federal criminal investigation for alleged underage sex trafficking until the story became public last week as the result of an alleged extortion sideshow.

We’ve been wondering if the sudden public nature of the probe would change the Feds’ approach. Shortly after the Gaetz news was reported, the Feds hit his already-indicted pal Joel Greenberg with an additional round of felony charges. This felt like an attempt by the Feds at pressuring Greenberg into flipping on Gaetz.

If that’s the case, then it apparently worked, because Greenberg’s lawyers just announced in court that Greenberg is indeed likely to cut a plea deal. To be clear, Greenberg knows that his only path for getting a deal is to flip on Gaetz and everyone else involved. Gaetz is considered a bigger fish than Greenberg, because he’s a sitting Congressman who stands accused of serious felonies.

Assuming Greenberg goes through with his intention to cut a deal, he’ll have to immediately provide the Feds with all of his texts, emails, and communications with Matt Gaetz and others involved in the scandal. This, along with Greenberg’s testimony, could help the Feds get to the point much more quickly where they feel they have enough of a slam dunk case to go ahead and arrest Gaetz.
