Over the past few weeks, Donald Trump has begun trying harder than ever to cost himself reelection. It’s not clear if the Mayor of Crazy Town has given up any hope of winning and is therefore just trying to cause problems out of spite, or if he’s simply too far gone to understand what he’s doing. Either way, his buddy Lindsey Graham is freaking out about it.

This morning Donald Trump viciously attacked NASCAR Bubba Wallace simply for being black, while criticizing NASCAR for banning the confederate flag, and gloating that NASCAR’s TV ratings are supposedly down. This is a problem for Lindsey Graham, who represents South Carolina, where NASCAR is beloved.

Now Graham is pushing back against Trump in a new Fox interview. Graham praised NASCAR for “trying to grow the sport,” adding that “I’ve lived in South Carolina all my life and if you’re in business, the Confederate flag is not a good way to grow your business.” He added that we should “celebrate” the manner in which white NASCAR drivers rallied to Bubba Wallace’s defense.

We award Lindsey Graham no points for finally speaking out against Donald Trump’s racism at this late date, after Graham has already actively helped Trump do so much damage, and even as Graham continues to try to prop Trump up in other ways. But it’s becoming clear that Graham is afraid Trump’s increasingly deranged behavior is going to cost them both reelection – and Graham is trying to figure out how to incrementally distance himself from Trump’s sinking ship.
