Jack Smith has criminally indicted Donald Trump on seven felony charges in the classified documents probe, and Smith will surely bring additional charges against Trump later in his other probes such as 1/6 and wire fraud. But for now all eyes are on just how quickly Trump will get to trial on today’s charges.

One legal expert, Laurence Tribe, is saying that things will play out “more swiftly” because Jack Smith moved the indictment from DC to Florida. Tribe tweeted that Smith has now taken away Trump’s ability to delay things by making nuisance filings requesting a change of venue.

Other legal experts have pointed out that the federal court circuit in Florida tends to get to trial more quickly in general then the federal court circuit in DC. Still others have pointed out that because the federal courts in Florida have already shot down every filing that Trump has already trying to get evidence thrown out, it’ll take away even more of Trump’s delay tactics. Remember, trial delay tactics are finite. Once you run out of them, the trial happens, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

It’s clear that Jack Smith brought these initial charges with one eye on making sure that Donald Trump’s (first) federal criminal trial reaches completion well before the height of the 2024 election.
