You’re Special Counsel Robert Mueller. You’ve been working for more than a year and a half to build a criminal case so comprehensive, it’ll be enough to take down a sitting President of the United States. You’ve got him nailed every which way. But as you gear up for your big endgame, the President is inevitably going to try some last minute antics to derail you. Then the President loses track of what he’s doing.

This is, incredibly, the situation that Robert Mueller now finds himself in. He’s about ready to make his big move, and “President” Donald Trump’s countermove is to… repeatedly attack John McCain and George Conway? What kind of dumb playbook is this? Even if Trump is doing this because he thinks it’ll distract the public from what Mueller is about to do, that doesn’t get Trump anywhere. All he’s doing is distracting himself, at a time when he should be focusing entirely on stopping or derailing or sabotaging Mueller.

Imagine being a race car driver on the final lap of the Daytona 500, and you look over and see that your main opponent is busy checking his phone, instead of focusing on chasing you to the checkered flag. At that point your only remaining concern might be that you’d die laughing.

It’s not just that Donald Trump is losing the plot by focusing on petty feuds instead of focusing on saving himself. It’s that he’s attacking a deceased Republican war hero, and a Republican operative with a lot of friends in the party, at a time when his fate is about to be decided by how many Republicans in Congress decide to selfishly sell him out because they don’t want to go down with him. This is beyond-the-pale stupid.
