Despite the importance of the ongoing federal criminal investigation into Congressman Matt Gaetz, the media has largely been ignoring the story of late, because relatively few new details have publicly surfaced. But as Palmer Report likes to point out, federal criminal cases don’t play out in the media; they play out in legal parameters.

Accordingly, the probe into Matt Gaetz is now reaching a key moment. The deadline has arrived this week for federal criminal prosecutors to decide whether to give a plea deal cooperation agreement to Gaetz’s associate Joel Greenberg, who has been indicted on a number of the same charges that Gaetz is being investigated for.

Legal expert Elie Honig tweeted this today: “Watch what happens with Joel Greenberg later this week. I don’t see any realistic way prosecutors give Greenberg a cooperation agreement — and potentially a major sentencing reduction that comes with it — unless they intend to use his information to make another case.”

We tend to agree. If the Feds give Greenberg a deal and he agrees to plead guilty, then they’ll be giving leniency to a confessed pedophile. There is no way they’re going to do that unless Greenberg’s cooperation is necessary to take down someone much more important who is also accused of heinous crimes – and that person would have to be Matt Gaetz.

So if the Feds fail to reach a deal with Joel Greenberg this week, it doesn’t mean that Matt Gaetz is magically off the hook; it could mean that the Feds have decided they can make their case against Gaetz without needing Greenberg’s help. But if the Feds do announce a deal with Greenberg this week, then it’ll be Gaetz’s worst nightmare.
