Thus far today we’ve seen Republican Senator Mitt Romney come out swinging against Donald Trump, and we’ve seen Republican Senator Marco Rubio try to play dumb about Trump’s scandals. But one Republican Senator is coming out swinging in Trump’s favor today, and it’s not going well for him.

John Cornyn tried taking a pro-Trump stand by posting this tweet: “Now, the Trump Justice Department is investigating foreign government influence, VP Biden conflicts of interest, and possible corruption as well as the provenance of the bogus opposition research compiled for the Clinton campaign produced by an ex-British spy, and this is grounds for impeachment?”

This set off such a firestorm, it caused the term “Trump Justice Department” to begin trending on Twitter, as everyone tried to figure out what he was melting down about. Did Cornyn really just tip off that Donald Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr are having the DOJ run a sham investigation into Joe Biden over the fake Ukraine scandal they invented? If so, they’re going to prison forever.

Suffice it to say that the responses to John Cornyn’s deranged anti-American tweet were not kind. He quickly got ratioed, with far more negative comments than likes. But it’s easy to understand why these various GOP Senators are taking diverging positions on Trump today. Cornyn is running for Senate reelection in Texas, and he’s betting (for now) that his own best bet is to stand with Trump. Romney has decided that his best shot at being President someday is to hit Trump hard. Rubio is trying to avoid taking a position until it becomes more clear how Trump’s downfall will play in his swing state of Florida. They’re each in it for themselves.
