I have a bumper sticker that says,” the sea, the beautiful sea.” That is because I have a fascination with the sea — and in protecting all beautiful things that live within it. Life has so much beauty. And one of life’s most beautiful and mysterious wonders is the sea.

Wednesday is World ocean day. And in the spirit of that day, if one adores the ocean and all of its intricate mysteries, the following news will likely make you very happy. President Biden has turned his attention to ocean conservation.

The goal of the Biden administration is to preserve 30 percent of the water and land in our country. To that end, a series of announcements have been made. The Biden administration wants a new sanctuary. This would be in the Hudson Canyon.

Biden also wants to phase out “single-use plastics in national parks and on public lands by 2032.” And Deb Haaland, Interior Secretary, will be focused on finding biodegradable alternatives. Here is what Haaland had to say about this:

“The interior Department has an obligation to play a leading role in reducing the impact of plastic waste on our ecosystems and our climate.”

“As the steward of the nation’s public lands, including national parks and national wildlife refuges, and as the agency responsible for conservation and management of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, we are uniquely positioned to do better for our earth.”

Bravo, Joe Biden! And thank you, Deb Haaland. This is so needed. Ocean conservation is yet another thing the former guy did not seem to give a damn about. It does not surprise me that President Biden DOES, in fact, give a damn.

Maybe he, too, has let the crash of the sea’s waves beguile him. Perhaps he has also been born witness to its beauty, wildness, and enchantment. Oceana, an ocean conservation group, has praised these orders out of the Biden administration, as have other groups. Perhaps with a renewed focus on it, our seas will continue to thrive.
