Even as Donald Trump becomes even more unpopular with the American mainstream, and his worsening legal troubles are causing some of his allies to wonder if they should incrementally distance themselves from him, House Republican Jim Jordan is in a different kind of situation. He’s a material witness (or worse) in Trump’s election overthrow plot, so he’s more or less tied to Trump at the hip. And Jordan represents a far right district where most of the voters like that Jordan is a slimy right wing creep.

So even if other House Republicans in less-extreme districts do begin throwing Trump under the bus once he’s criminally charged for espionage and such, it’s a good bet Jim Jordan will stick with Trump as long as possible. In fact Jordan is already trying to preemptively set up a right wing talking point in relation to Trump’s now-inevitable arrest.

Here’s what Jordan tweeted: “If there was a government ‘informant’ at Mar-a-Lago, then we now know they spied on President Trump before he was in office, while he was in office, and after he was in office.”

You see what Jim Jordan is doing, right? When taking down a hardened crime boss like Donald Trump, the Feds routinely flip witnesses within the crime boss’ organization. So it’s no surprise that the DOJ search and seizure warrant affidavit against Trump includes the sealed names of one or more people who are secretly cooperating against Trump. This is standard practice. But Jordan is trying to portray this as the Feds “spying” on Trump.

This is nothing new, of course. Donald Trump has previously claimed that legitimate criminal investigators were “spying” on him, as if he’s some kind of deity and anyone who’s daring to look into his crimes must be a “spy” for the enemy. But Jim Jordan appears to be giving away that Trump is going to try to use that narrative again, even though this time he’ll be on criminal trial. Good luck; that’s not how trials are won or lost. If Trump is going to try to win this criminal case in the media, he might as well just give up now.
