Donald Trump is still in office for another six weeks, but the trouble for him and his family is already mounting. For instance, House and Senate Democrats are now launching a probe into whether Jared Kushner pushed Trump into altering U.S. foreign policy so that Middle Eastern governments would bail out Kushner’s troubled real estate portfolio.

Why bother investigating the matter now, with Trump leaving office? Actually, this is the perfect time to do so. This kind of congressional probe can uncover evidence, and educate the public about the level of corruption that went on during the Trump regime. Trump’s base may not care, but the rest of the nation will.

In addition, if this probe uncovers evidence of criminal behavior, Congress can refer it to Department of Justice for criminal prosecution once Trump is gone. Trump is reportedly planning to try to preemptively pardon his family, including Kushner, on his way out the door. The more the public is made aware of Kushner’s potential crimes beforehand, the more cover prosecutors will have for filing charges and challenging the legality of the preemptive pardons.
