Whatever you think of former FBI Director James Comey, he’s nothing if not mild mannered. He’s arguably best known to the general public for his “Lordy I hope there are tapes” retort after Donald Trump suggested he may have secretly taped his conversations with Comey. But now that Trump has fired Comey’s former Deputy Andrew McCabe for vindictive and obstructive purposes, ten months after having fired Comey for similar reasons, Comey is publicly firing back.

After Trump succeeded in ordering Attorney General Jeff Sessions to fire McCabe on Friday evening, just hours before McCabe would have been eligible for a full pension, Trump wasn’t satisfied with his victory. Just after midnight he posted this angry missive to Twitter: “Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!”

This was how Comey responded on Saturday: “Mr. President, the American people will hear my story very soon. And they can judge for themselves who is honorable and who is not.” We’re awarding this round to Comey, because he’s in the right, and because he kept his composure better, and because he managed to use Trump’s attack to promote his own upcoming book. Comey is set to release a book roughly a month from now which will detail his career at the FBI, including his interactions with Trump.

Donald Trump has now fired FBI Director James Comey, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, and several others in an ongoing attempt at fending off the Trump-Russia criminal investigation. The probe has nonetheless continued unabated.
