When Donald Trump commuted Roger Stone’s prison sentence on Friday night, it certainly wasn’t because he wanted to. In fact he tried to hold off doing so, until Stone publicly blackmailed him at the last minute by reminding NBC News that he had criminal dirt on Trump.

Even Trump’s increasingly addled brain knows that the Stone commutation will knock another few points off his approval rating, making it even harder for him to win the election. This comes on the heels of Trump’s devastating loss in the tax returns case, which helps ensure that he’ll go to prison if he loses the election. And of course an increasing number of Americans blame him for screwing up the pandemic and race relations, even as the economy teeters. Everything is going wrong for Trump that can possibly go wrong.

So it’s not surprising to see the Washington Post reporting that Donald Trump is now “inconsolable” about how badly things are falling apart for him. Nor is it surprising that Trump’s handlers have been feeding him laughably phony internal polls that claim he’s doing well in the election. It is a bit more surprising to read that Trump’s handlers have been doing things like putting pro-Trump truckers in front of the White House in the hope of cheering him up, as if he were some despondent eight year old.

In any case, it’s yet another sign that Donald Trump is falling apart both psychologically and cognitively. Instead of fighting to save his own skin, he’s moping around in self pitying fashion. And he’s so far gone in the head, his handlers are literally trying to cheer him up by showing him some big trucks. With Trump totally off his game, it gives us an opening to focus even more on things like voter registration and voter turnout while he mopes like a dope.
