He really did it…

Donald Trump was determined to keep his promise to pardon the January 6 defendants. According to USA Today, several were released overnight. He has issued pardons to almost 1,600 people, and he commuted the sentences of two of the worst: Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes, who was to serve 18 years, and Enrique Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22. Trump’s response was: “These people have been destroyed. What they’ve done to these people is outrageous.” These people are criminals, and they were where they belonged. He’s concerned about immigrant crime. Yet, he’s quite alright with releasing domestic criminals. This is Trump’s attempt to rewrite history while letting these dangerous people back on the street.
Mitch McConnell, who was never a fan of this entire event, is not happy with Trump’s decision. McConnell spoke on the Senate floor after the event and publicly said that the blame for the event belonged to Trump (but would not vote for impeachment). When he learned of Trump’s recent activities, he wasn’t happy. While participating in an interview with Semafor, McConnell quoted JD Vance, who recently said that January 6 rioters who attacked police “obviously shouldn’t be pardoned.” Yet, Trump issued a blanket pardon for all of them. McConnell said: “I agree with the vice president. No one should excuse violence. And particularly violence against police officers.” McConnell claimed that while he supports Trump, there are issues on which they don’t agree. Regardless of what Mitch McConnell thinks, others have reason to fear the release of these people.
Former U.S. Capitol policeman Aquilino Gonell shared that he was given warnings by the DOJ (something Trump’s DOJ will likely never do). While speaking with his fellow former officer Harry Dunn, Gonell shared a screenshot of his call log, which showed nearly a dozen automated calls from the DOJ containing the message: “The defendant you testified against is being released from the department of corrections.” Dunn said every defendant assaulted Gonell, so he may not know whom to fear. According to AlterNet, Dunn and Gonell were two of the people who received preemptive pardons from President Biden, which he deemed necessary to prevent the Trump administration from seeking “revenge” against them. Gonell wrote that he was “just doing my job and fulfilling my oath to defend this country. He thanked Biden for everything he did to protect the nation’s democracy.
This is merely one of the bad decisions we can look for from Donald Trump. It’s as if he is going out of his way to make our world an unpleasant and unsafe place. He has no concept of right and wrong, and he cares only for himself and his “friends.” This is what he will spend the next four years doing-taking care of the people he likes or owes and flipping his finger at the rest. His biggest supporters are already whining about his plans, none of which he kept secret. They once again voted against their own interests, and they expect the rest of us to feel bad for them. That’s not going to happen.
