Hasta la vista, Senator Sinema. Kyrsten Sinema has decided to leave the Democratic party and become an independent. Her explanation of why matters little to me as the truth and Sinema do not march in lockstep.

Sinema has been a blister on the Democratic party for years. We know this. It isn’t just her stubborn refusal to even think of changing the filibuster rules. It’s the fact that she’s arrogant. It’s the fact that she gives cute little curtseys and lives basically in secrecy, as nobody knows who the woman is and what she wants.

So I say good riddance — and hasta la vista. Now — a few words about how this will affect the democratic party. It will not hurt our majority. Sinema still intends to caucus with us, and she is keeping her committee assignments.

We actually have two other independents on our team, including Senator Bernie Sanders. But some are mystified. They ask why she chose to do this NOW. There are many theories. One is that the woman simply cannot live without attention. Sinema is the ultimate chameleon. She slips from one disguise to another as easily as one might ask for the time. One never knows day to day which Sinema might show up. That is after all all what chameleons do.

They exist in veiled secrecy, flipping their disguises, content in the knowledge that nobody will ever understand them. Many think Sinema is worried about 2024. And she should be. Could she be planning to run as an independent? I don’t doubt that could be part of her strategy. But the problem for Sinema is that she’s burned her bridges. Nobody trusts her. Nobody likes her. She is, however, grandiose enough not to be able to realize that.

Perhaps she is worried about 2024. Perhaps she’s simply bought and paid for, and this is what her buyers wanted her to do. Maybe she needs her daily dose of attention. I happen to think the reasons for her switch are all of the above. Sinema can’t connect with people. If she actually runs in 2024 — and that’s a very big if — I doubt she can win, no, matter if there’s a D or an R next to her name.

Nobody can trust her. It’s as simple as that. So I bid adieu to Senator Sinema. I hope this move makes her happy. Heaven knows nothing else has.
