When Donald Trump was asked about Ghislaine Maxwell during a press conference last week, he seemed caught off guard. The only answer he could come up with was “I wish her well” – which is a really disturbing thing to say about an alleged child sex trafficker. But did Trump really mean to say that, or was he just befuddled in the moment? Last night Trump got a do-over.

Trump had to know that he would end up being asked about Maxwell again, and he had plenty of time to come up with a better answer. In fact he had an easy out by simply saying that he didn’t want to interfere with an ongoing case by stating an opinion on it. But when Axios reporter Jonathan Swan asked him about Maxwell last night, Trump merely doubled down on the sentiment about wishing her well.

This means that Donald Trump really is so afraid of whatever dirt Ghislaine Maxwell has on him, he’s willing to keep making himself look bad by publicly wishing her well, just to try to send her a message that she shouldn’t flip on him. Not only is Trump illegally hinting to Maxwell that he might pardon her in return for her silence, he’s giving away that he played an ugly role in his friend Jeffrey Epstein’s hideous crime spree.
