As Americans of all races and ethnicities continue to protest against the brutal mistreatment of black people at the hands of the police, Donald Trump ordered the military to fire tear gas on peaceful protesters outside the White House last night. It appears Trump’s maniacal stunt has finally prompted former President George W. Bush to speak up about the situation.

George W. Bush released a lengthy statement today, acknowledging America’s long history of institutional racism and racial injustice. He posted it to his official website, which promptly crashed due to the sheer amount of traffic, but Geoff Bennett of NBC managed to grab a screen shot:

It’s only fair to ask why George W. Bush didn’t say any of these things, or appear to believe any of them, while he was doing his own disastrous job as President. But at least he’s saying them now, at a time when America needs all the allies it can get against Donald Trump. While Bush doesn’t mention Trump by name, he’s clearly pushing back against Trump’s escalating racist rhetoric, which is important. Now, will Bush end up doing the right thing and endorsing Joe Biden? We’ll see.
