When a rogue federal judge issued an incoherent ruling yesterday in favor of Donald Trump’s request for a special master in a DOJ criminal case that’s already moved past any potential special master stage, I predicted that it wouldn’t end up having an real impact on the DOJ’s case against Trump. The delay, if there even is one, will be minor before the laugh out loud ruling gets tossed on appeal.

Now it turns out the unlikeliest of sources agrees with me: Bill Barr. Yes, that Bill Barr. The guy who used his first go-round as Attorney General to bury what was left of the Iran-Contra scandal, and used his second go-round to bury Donald Trump’s Russia-related crimes.

Let’s be clear. Bill Barr is a thug who is guilty of numerous instances of obstruction of justice. He deserves credit for nothing. But, if only because he’s trying to salvage what’s left of his own tattered reputation, lately he’s been honestly acknowledging just how much legal trouble Donald Trump is now in.

Barr just appeared on Fox News of all places and said that the special master ruling will likely be overturned on appeal, and that even if it isn’t overturned, it’s still not going to “fundamentally change the trajectory” of the DOJ’s Trump probe.

In other words, aside from the disturbing revelation that Trump appears to have some kind of dirt on a sitting federal judge who needs to be impeached, the special master thing isn’t really a story when it comes to Trump’s takedown. However it was that Trump managed to pull off this ruling, it’s not going to help him, and he burned this judge for nothing.

So why is Bill Barr going on Fox News and honestly admitting what’s really going to happen? He presumably fancies himself as having a new career as a right-leaning legal expert, and even they have to make predictions that come true in order to establish relative “credibility” with right-leaning viewers.

Barr knows Trump is going down, and he knows this special master ruling is a red herring that won’t amount to much, and once things play out that way he wants to be able to say to his audience “See, I know what I’m talking about.” Barr belongs in prison alongside Trump, but for now we’ll take all the unlikely allies we can get when it comes to taking Trump down.
