I’ll admit that when I sat down to try to write something about the passing of John Lewis, the words didn’t come easily. How do you distill a life like his into a few lines? But then there’s the case of Donald Trump, as of 1pm eastern time today, still hasn’t tweeted anything to even so much as acknowledge that Lewis has died.

Keep in mind that a sitting Congressman passed away last night. Stature and party affiliation aside, it’s absurd and embarrassing that the President of the United States still wouldn’t have said anything about it by now. When that sitting Congressman is a legend and icon like John Lewis, it’s even more embarrassing. Trump has found time today to attack everyone from Joe Biden to New York Magazine, but not a word about Lewis. Yes, it’s Saturday, but the presidency isn’t a part time job.

Trump’s press secretary tweeted this message: “Rep. John Lewis was an icon of the civil rights movement, and he leaves an enduring legacy that will never be forgotten. We hold his family in our prayers, as we remember Rep. John Lewis’ incredible contributions to our country.”

That’s fine, if generic and half hearted. But this message should have come from Donald Trump, not from some stooge working for him. Trump found time to viciously and dishonestly attack John Lewis while he was alive, but he has nothing to say now that Lewis has passed. We saw Trump pull the same antics when war hero John McCain died. It’s just embarrassing – like everything else about the Trump presidency.
