While everybody is talking about the late-night Friday filing and who the Special Master will ultimately wind up being, a little nugget from the filing has caused some eyebrows to raise, and it’s got nothing to do with WHO the Special Master will be. It is about who will PAY for said special master.
In their filing, Trump’s defense team asks that they and the Justice Department split the baby. In other words, they pay half, and the DOJ pays half.
Here is precisely what the Trump team suggests: “Each party will bear 50% of the professional fees and expenses of the Special Master and any professionals, support staff, and expert consultants engaged at the special master’s request.”
To that, I say Hell no! Why should ANYONE but Trump pay for this Special Master that is not needed? If Trump wants one so badly, he should be the one to hand over the money. Anyone else agree?
But isn’t it just like Trump trying to get out of paying for something he asked for? There really is no end to his cheapness. As you might have guessed, the Department of Justice objected to this arrangement in their own filing. And legal experts everywhere are weighing in. They seem to be on the side of the DOJ.
So what will this (non) Judge decide to do? With the way she has been behaving so far, who knows? Maybe she’ll demand the DOJ pay for ALL of it. But I’m not worried. The DOJ will appear if they do not like her ruling, and the Trump team will likely continue to get out of spending a penny. That’s just who they are.
