Donald Trump’s dumpster fire just got even more toxic

Donald Trump and his mighty pen have been busy undoing things. He has revoked Executive Order 11246, which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law in 1965. Without going into detail, this means that companies can go back to hiring whoever they want without fear of reprisal. Trump’s White House calls it “the most important federal civil rights measures in decades” and that it “protects civil rights of all Americans and expands individual opportunity.” This is simply more of the myth that everyone is now treated equally, when we all know better. All the non-whites who voted for Trump should be seeing their error. If they don’t know, they soon will when they can’t find good jobs.
The idea of a colorblind society is still a dream in this country. Ask anyone you know of color. It’s also going to cost jobs. The New York Times reported that all federal DEI-related personnel will be placed on administrative leave and then laid off by the end of the month. While he was at it, Trump issued a separate order to the Federal Aviation Administration to stop diversity hires, claiming that “such practices have endangered passengers on airlines.” We would love to see his research that proves that to be true, but Trump is a big liar, so we shouldn’t be surprised if he just made that up.
The concept of providing greater opportunities is nice, but in this country, we can’t count on that. It would be wonderful if we were honestly chosen based on our talents, but let’s face it: we’re not. It is not lost on us that Trump claimed that President Biden “sought to specifically recruit and hire individuals with serious infirmities that could impact the execution of their essential life-saving duties.” This is bullshit. As opposed to Trump’s choices, President Biden’s choices of members of the judiciary were stellar. They were all competent and carried the necessary, relevant experience, unlike Trump’s nominee Aileen Cannon, who obviously does not know what she’s doing. Many of Biden’s choices just happened to be non-white. That does not automatically make them “infirm” or incapable of doing their jobs. This declaration, in fact, is quite insulting. This likely includes Kamala Harris, who was a great vice president and was the best choice for president.
Trump is also making changes to the ACA. Fortunately, what he did does not impact the $35 cap on insulin, the $2,000 annual out-of-pocket on drugs, and Medicare’s negotiating drug pricing provision. Thank God for that, but he ultimately wants to get rid of the ACA, even though he still has no plans or ideas about a replacement. His goal is to weaken the ACA to get rid of it, like overturning the policy that extended the open enrollment period in 36 states, which will give those people less time to find and get enrolled in coverage. Larry Levitt executive VP of a nonprofit group said: “Right now, he seems to be nibbling on the edges. But I hope he doesn’t go further.” Trump is just getting started. We might as well brace for the next negative executive order.
