The stock market plummeted yet again today, amid reports that House and Senate Republicans are panicking behind the scenes. This comes even as Fox News is now directly blaming Donald Trump and his tariff wars for screwing up the stock market and the economy. The news is getting so bad that even someone as oblivious and delusional as Trump is likely hearing all the negativity about him. So what’s he doing about it?

Trump himself appears to be doing nothing. Nor is there much he can do. When his babysitters sat him down this weekend for an interview with longtime sycophant Maria Bartiromo in order to reassure Americans about the economy, Trump’s answers were so bad that they directly led to today’s stock market selloff. And so right now Trump is presumably watching Scooby Doo cartoons, thinking they’re a documentary, because his babysitters can’t even let him watch Fox News right now.

Trump’s babysitters also appear to be trying to cheer Trump up by posting a series of old articles from January and February on his Truth Social page. There’s an article about Trump’s appearance at the Daytona 500. There’s a month old article about MSNBC’s lineup changes. It all feels like an attempt to force feed Trump “good” news, and since there isn’t any, it’s being culled from the first days of Trump’s term.

That’s what continues to be so remarkably bizarre about this era. Donald Trump is so cognitively impaired and so psychologically fragile that on a day his presidency is in tatters, his people are more concerned about keeping him from hearing bad news than they are about trying to salvage what’s left of his collapsing presidency.
