Over the past four weeks Donald Trump and his regime have shown us that they have no regard for the law, the constitution, democracy, decency, or sanity – and that’s putting it mildly. Now Trump has taken things to a place that’s psychotic even for him.

Trump posted this on social media on Saturday: “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.” Trump is stating, flatly, that the law does not apply to him or his henchmen. It’s an utterly preposterous sentiment that flies in the face of everything that democracy is built upon. Under this theory, anyone could do anything that they personally think is benefiting their country, even if it’s specifically illegal. It would result in complete anarchy.

Trump, of course, isn’t endorsing total anarchy. He’s merely claiming that the law doesn’t apply to him. He is, effectively, declaring himself Emperor. But I’m going to tell you something: by posting such a quote, Trump isn’t making himself stronger. Instead he’s giving away how weak and vulnerable his position is.

What do I mean by this? Over the past few weeks, numerous judges have issued injunctions that have put a stop to much of the Trump regime’s agenda. Trump can’t fire all the people he’s been trying to fire. His henchmen can’t access certain kinds of data. He can’t cut all the assistance programs that he’s been trying to cut. And so on. At nearly every turn, Trump is being shut down by the courts. And so now Trump is in a far weaker position than he was two weeks ago. This is why he’s resorting to posting quotes like this.

Trump and his henchmen are finding out that they can’t actually just do whatever they want. The Republican House and Senate may be rolling over for him. But the Democrats in Congress, and blue state leaders, aren’t rolling over for him. Instead they’re taking him to court, on issue after issue. They’re mostly winning. And Trump’s ambitiously evil agenda for his first hundred days is now sputtering.

Now that Trump and his people can see that the resistance against them is starting to work, he and his people are resorting to the next tactic down the list. That tactic consists of trying to convince the opposition that their efforts aren’t working, and aren’t going to matter. As such, Trump has now declared that he’s the King and that he can do whatever he wants.

It’s his way of trying to bait us into thinking that there’s really no point in trying to fight back against him, because he’s going to get his way anyway. In reality, we’re winning against Trump in major meaningful ways. But if Trump can bait us into giving up, then we won’t be scoring any more wins against him, and he will be able to just do whatever he wants.

Donald Trump’s quote should bother you. Greatly. It should offend you. It should enrage you. The gall of this guy to even say such a thing! But don’t let it demotivate you. Don’t give Trump what he wants. Instead, allow Trump’s quote to motivate you to fight back even harder. After all, if Trump were getting his way, he wouldn’t have to resort to posting quotes like this. All he’s doing is admitting that we’re gaining some real headway against him. And that’s a sign to fight even harder.
