Donald Trump is giving a speech right now that’s equal parts narcissistic, delusional, incoherent, senile, and evil. Almost none of what he’s saying is of particular importance. But Trump did just make one huge mistake that’s likely to harm his agenda in a tangible way.

After the legitimacy of Elon Musk’s DOGE agency was challenged in court, the Trump regime made a court filing claiming that Musk is not the head of DOGE. The argument is that some already-hired bureaucrat is leading the agency, and therefore it’s legitimate. It’s an absurd argument on its face. But now it’s guaranteed to fail in court, because Trump just announced during his speech that Musk is indeed the head of DOGE.

This leaves the Trump regime’s legal team in a no-win scenario. Either they’ll now have to admit that Musk is the head of DOGE, which would contradict their own recent filing and thus cost them the case. Or they’ll have to tell the court that Trump was lying during his address to Congress, which would also be a good way to lose the case. Whatever script Trump was supposed to stick to during his speech tonight, he’s blown it already.
