Donald Trump just let corrupt New York City Mayor Eric Adams off the hook

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a “Democrat” in name only whose policies have always been suspiciously Republican in nature, reportedly traveled to Mar-a-Lago last week to meet with Donald Trump. Today Trump’s DOJ dropped the ongoing federal criminal case against Adams. This is an obvious miscarriage of justice and a corrupt bargain. But there are always ways for us to fight back against Trump’s every move, and now two things need to happen.
First, now that the Feds have officially bowed out, New York Attorney General Letitia James and/or Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg need to bring state-level criminal charges against Adams. That shouldn’t be difficult, given the breadth and depth of Adams’ corruption. James and Bragg have certainly been willing to try to hold Trump accountable, so there’s every reason to expect they’ll be willing to do the same with Adams. And there’s literally nothing Trump can do to interfere in a state level criminal case. But that’s not enough.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (a Democrat) has the power to remove Adams from office and order a special election to replace him. Up to now she’s declined to do so, presumably preferring to let the legal process play out. But bringing a state level criminal case against Adams will take time, and suddenly there’s no more time.
Adams and Trump obviously cut some kind of corrupt deal. Most likely Adams agreed to let Trump send ICE to run roughshod over New York City while targeting immigrants, or something along those lines. This can’t happen. And so Hochul must remove Adams from office NOW. The voters can decide who replaces Adams in a special election, but as of today, Adams can no longer be in office. He’s a security risk to the city and its people.
