Donald Trump is at it again

Those who did not vote for Donald Trump knew that he would be bad for the country. Those who voted for him apparently thought otherwise. Based on his actions to date, he is much worse than we ever dreamed. He repealed an executive order that had been in place for 60 years, which gave him the authority to dismantle diversity programs in the federal government, including making people working in that area eventually unemployed. It is ironic that conservatives use the words of Dr. King to support their anti-diversity agenda. They even have the nerve to quote his words, which ring hollow when you consider the meanings from the speakers.

On the very day that we celebrated Dr. King this year, Trump was busy dismantling everything he stood for, claiming: “Martin Luther King Day, and his honor, this will be a great honor, but in his honor we will strive together to make his dream a reality. We will make his dream come true.” (NBC News) Yet, by his very actions, he did the exact opposite of what King taught. They twist his words to fit their agenda, which makes that agenda even more painful. Dr. King’s youngest daughter, Reverend Bernice King, wrote on X: “To every politician: The next time you quote my father, let it be in support of voting rights, civil rights, or human rights. Or in support of eradicating racism, poverty, and war. Or in support of reparations, a livable wage, or ending police brutality.” King pointed out exactly what is wrong with Trump’s actions. Trump’s rein of terror is only just beginning.

Another executive order signed by Trump required federal agencies to pause disbursement of funds earmarked for President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. These projects include highway expansions, electric vehicle infrastructure, water system upgrades, and investments in manufacturing. According to Politico, these funds were generating jobs in Republican-led states. In addition, many of these projects are already underway, meaning Trump wants to stop them before completion. People who were working on these projects could find themselves jobless, and eventually, Trump will likely stop these projects by refusing funding and cancelling contracts.

He is also sidestepping Congress on spending issues, which is part of their job. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) said: “The law is very clear that he has to do what has been passed by Congress. He is not a king. I call on him to abide by the law.” What’s most pathetic about this action is he is, once again, hurting the very people who wanted him back in the White House. This calls us to ask why they wanted him back so badly. We knew what his agenda would hurt people, but he could at least pretend that he cares about the people who voted for him. That was their mistake because Trump obviously cares for only himself. Politico opined that Trump’s action could become “messy” as states will insist that projects already under be completed. Even some Republicans want these projects to continue to help their states. Three words for them: Trump doesn’t care.

This is the fight of our lives. Donald Trump and his unelected henchmen are actively trying to destroy our government, our democracy, and our way of life. We only have one choice, and that's to fight back as loudly and aggressively as possible.
