If Donald Trump had any sense at all, he’d be lying as low as possible right now, in the hope that America might become too focused on Vladimir Putin’s crime spree to remember Donald Trump’s own crime spree. But ever since he lost the 2020 election, Trump has been on an increasingly self destructive path. Sure enough, he’s now speaking up and making sure everyone remembers that he’s always been Putin’s puppet.

Days ago Trump called Putin “smart” for invading Ukraine, and he faced widespread blowback for it. Now Trump has given a subsequent speech at the CPAC convention, and he clearly intended to do damage control. He started off by suggesting that he was calling Putin “smart” in the sense that he’s a savvy villain who needs to be taken seriously. But then Trump went on to slam the United States and NATO for being the “opposite” of smart in dealing with Putin. Trump then circled back to praise Putin for being “smart” a few more times.

The kicker is that the United States, NATO, and European Union are in fact being very smart in dealing with Putin. They’re sending top of the line defensive weaponry to Ukrainian forces, to help repel the Russian army. They’ve removed multiple Russian banks from the SWIFT banking system, in order to financially cripple Russia and its oligarchs, in the hope it’ll lead to Putin being ousted from within. It’s Trump who has no idea how any of this stuff works, and is indeed the opposite of smart.
