Donald Trump caught in the act

Several media accounts have published stories of people complaining that Trump is not keeping his campaign promises. Oh, but he is; it’s just not the ones they wanted to hear. We all knew that Trump retaking the White House would meant it’s time for his revenge. He’s been doing quite well with that, but with respect to inflation and groceries, he’s already walked it back. Does that make it no longer a promise? One promise he distinctly made was to cut government “waste.” As we (should have) expected, he is doing that by cutting aid to the poorest people in the country, most of whom are his supporters.

Salon recently reported that the cuts Republicans plan to Medicaid could leave 22 million Americans without health care. So much for lowering costs for people. This plan might lower costs inside the federal budget, but it’s going to leave people scrambling. The freeze already caused quite a bit of chaos for people who receive Medicaid. Republicans don’t care about these people. You get that quite clearly from a statement made by the acting director of OMB, who said that “the freeze was aimed at ‘ending wokeness.'” Seriously? Republicans are lunatics. They care more about some made-up harm than they do about the people they purportedly represent. Ron Wyden (D-OR) posted: “This is a blatant attempt to rip away health care from millions of Americans overnight and will get people killed.” Then, they’d better line up to kill Trump since he’s the one that caused this. To quote Salon: “While more than 72 million Americans enrolled in Medicaid grapple with the uncertainty introduced by the Trump administration, congressional Republicans are eyeing more permanent and sweeping cuts to the program.”

What’s funny about Trump’s racist supporters is that they’ve always tried to blame non-whites as taking up the largest share of Medicaid recipients. Nothing could be farther from the truth. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 60% of the total U.S. population is white, non-Hispanic. 43% of those whites get Medicaid and CHIP. The remaining recipients and their percentage share of Medicare are: 28% Hispanic, 21% Black, 5.5% Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American/Native Alaskan, 1.3%, and multiracial, 1.4%. It should be blatantly obvious which race takes the largest share of Medicare. It is, accordingly, clear that Trump’s policies will hit his supporters worse than anyone else. After all the promises he made, he has no intention of keeping any, especially as those promises that relate to making life better for middle-class and low-income citizens.

Sam Cornale is the executive director of the DNC. He sums this all up best: “Trump lied to the American people for months on the campaign trail, promising to lower their costs on day one. It’s clear from Trump’s first week in office that he’s focused on the bottom line of his billionaire backers, not working families.” Of course he lied. All he ever does is lie. The problem is the people who take him at his word. He is not a trustworthy man, and by now, everyone should know that.

This is the fight of our lives. Donald Trump and his unelected henchmen are actively trying to destroy our government, our democracy, and our way of life. We only have one choice, and that's to fight back as loudly and aggressively as possible.
