Considering how much damage Donald Trump has done to the Republicans’ prospects in the Georgia Senate runoffs, it’s a bit surprising he even bothered to show up for tonight’s Valdosta rally. Let’s just say that it didn’t go particularly well for anyone involved.

Trump spent much of his speech ranting and raving about how the presidential election was rigged against him: “When the numbers come out of ceilings and come out of leather bags, you say what’s going on?”

Trump also insisted “a lot of people already are vaccinated,” apparently confusing vaccination for immunity. He went on to insist that he should “always get credit” for unspecified coronavirus “therapeutics.” In other words, the entire thing was all about him, which doesn’t help Georgia’s Republican Senate candidates at all.

Then Trump got to the part where he actively hurt the Republicans’ chances in the runoffs, by pushing conspiracy theories that will merely convince Republican voters that it’s rigged against them, and that there is therefore no reason to bother voting.

“You’ve got to make sure they don’t throw away any ballots,” Trump insisted. “You’ve got to make sure your Secretary of State knows what the hell he’s doing.” Then he went back to rambling about how he secretly won the presidency, before adding “I want to stay on presidentials, but I have to get on to these two.” Then he immediately went back to ranting about his own imaginary win.

In other words, Perdue and Loeffler are just a sideshow, and Trump was there tonight to air his own personal grievances about being the most thoroughly rejected person in American history. The Republicans would have been better off in the Georgia runoffs if Trump hadn’t bothered to show up tonight. You can donate to Democratic candidates Ossoff and Warnock here.
