As of today, Donald Trump is no longer even bothering to yell “witch hunt” anymore. Now that twelve Russian government spies have been indicted for hacking the Democratic Party during the election and giving that information to at least one member of the Trump campaign and at least one member of the GOP Congress, Trump can no longer pretend that the Trump-Russia investigation is about nothing. Nor can he pretend that he and his party’s fingerprints weren’t on it. So now he’s trying out what can only be described as his desperate, final defense.

Here’s the best that Trump could come up with for his last line of defense: “The stories you heard about the 12 Russians yesterday took place during the Obama Administration, not the Trump Administration. Why didn’t they do something about it, especially when it was reported that President Obama was informed by the FBI in September, before the Election?”

That’s right, Donald Trump is more or less saying “Okay I committed treason, but it’s the black guy’s fault for not being able to stop me!” Or to distill it down to what he’s really trying to get across to his racist base: “At least I’m white.” In other words, now that Trump can no longer even try to pretend that his Russian pals didn’t rig the election in his favor, now he’s falling back on the core message that he’s been pushing from day one: racism.

Donald Trump’s base alone isn’t large enough to save him. He’s only still in the Oval Office thanks to his passive supporters outside his base. At some point very soon, as it becomes even more blindingly clear that Trump is a traitor who conspired with a foreign enemy to rig the election in his favor, they’ll have to decide whether or not they’re on America’s side. It’s not about his base; they’ll ride him all the way to the bottom. It’s about the mild racists who would generally prefer a white president, but maybe can’t continue to stomach this white president.
