It was a bad sign for Republican Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley when he tripped over so many words while reading his prepared opening remarks, it was almost difficult at times to figure out what he was trying to say. As it turns out, the opening statement might have been the least embarrassing part of Grassley’s performance. Once Dr. Christine Blasey Ford began testifying, Grassley proceeded to outright humiliate himself.

Actually, Chuck Grassley was so eager to cut off every woman who dared to speak during this hearing, he interrupted ranking member Dianne Feinstein during her opening statement. After Grassley stated that he would allow each questioner to exceed the five minute block under certain circumstances, he then proceeded to cut off Rachel Mitchell – his own hired gun prosecutor – at the precise five minute mark.

Later, Grassley got defensive after Senator Amy Klobuchar called him out for his refusal to allow the person who administered Ford’s lie detector test to show up and testify. He got short with Senator Kamala Harris as well. The more poorly things went for him and his Republican Party, the more snippety Grassley’s behavior became.

This entire hearing, which is still dragging on into the afternoon, is quickly becoming a total debacle for the GOP, and the Republican Senators on this committee will not be remembered kindly for it by history. Even as cowards like Orrin Hatch have spent the entire time allowing a hired gun to speak on their behalf, Chuck Grassley seems desperate to prove that he’s in control of this train wreck.
