If you’re familiar with chess terminology, “checkmate” doesn’t mean the game is over. It means you’ve made a move that guarantees your opponent will lose, regardless of his response. In that sense, Adam Schiff has indeed achieved checkmate this week against Donald Trump and his family. Trump seems to know it too.
Yesterday, Adam Schiff and his House Intel Committee gave all of the Trump-Russia testimony transcripts to Special Counsel Robert Mueller. We don’t know for sure how many of them contain perjury, but when Devin Nunes was the Chairman, he specifically brought in all these people in order to have them commit perjury. More to the point, Democrats on the committee have already publicly confirmed that Donald Trump Jr committed perjury.
This alone is enough to end Donald Trump. His son is about to be indicted and arrested, and while he’ll be charged with several crimes that are far more serious than perjury, he’ll have no chance of beating the perjury charges even if he weasels out of the more complicated stuff. Even if Donald Trump doesn’t care about his son going to prison, his lawyers will surely explain to him that he’s going to be charged in his son’s treasonous conspiracy as well, and that he’ll be arrested the minute he’s no longer president.
This is game over. Donald Trump is now in a situation where, as soon as he’s out of office, he’s going to prison for the rest of his life. He also has zero chance of dragging this out another two years before he’s forcibly ousted. In other words, his life is over unless he cuts a resignation deal in exchange for reduced prison time. Trump’s response to Adam Schiff’s move suggests he knows it’s over.
Donald Trump posted this ridiculously frantic tweet today: “So now Congressman Adam Schiff announces, after having found zero Russian Collusion, that he is going to be looking at every aspect of my life, both financial and personal, even though there is no reason to be doing so. Never happened before! Unlimited Presidential Harassment. The Dems and their committees are going ‘nuts.’ The Republicans never did this to President Obama, there would be no time left to run government. I hear other committee heads will do the same thing. Even stealing people who work at White House! A continuation of Witch Hunt!” Yep, Trump knows he’s toast.
